To find out what to photograph a particular cube is made up of you need to use another technique. In this method, you use the illumination coming from a light source at different angles. Sometimes it helps if you place your camera on the opposite side of the light source, so that the light source comes from behind you. Now, point the camera at the middle of the cube using your pointing device, and look for where the light comes from. You can do this while standing or sitting, but preferably while leaning against something sturdy and flat.

The algorithm for this method of finding out what photograph is made up of goes like this: (start at the top left and work downwards) the light source will shine off the left wall, illuminating the entire thing. The one on the right will receive the light from the bottom right, illuminating the one below it. Finally, the light source shining from above will shine onto the middle square. Thus, by analyzing how the light patterns come into the cube and the direction they face, we can estimate how much each face is worth.

That's it! It's really very easy to recognize every photo in the book, just by looking at the photo and identifying which faces are Rubik's cubes and which are not. If you want a more advanced form of photo analysis, such as determining the number of faces in a square, the software is available as well. I've used it to create an animated Rubik's cube, and it works quite well.
