Overhead Power Lines

Most of the homes in Sydney get their power from overhead power lines. The overhead service line is the cable that connects from your property to the power poles on your road or street. It runs from your point of attachment to the power pole. For that reason, power lines must be maintained and repaired and kept in working order. That is part of the role a level 2 electrician Sydney has. Here is a look in more detail about overhead power lines and what to do should a problem arise with them.

What is the point of attachment?

Where the service line connects your house to the power grid is the point of attachment. From there it moves to the switchboard and that controls the electricity flowing into your home. Some people have a private power pole on their land and the service line goes to that pole first before connecting to your property.

What common problems happen?

There are two main types of problems that can occur, defects and accidental damage. The former includes things like;

  1. Low hanging cables that are achieving the minimum clearance
  2. Broken wires and exposed copper
  3. Branches and growth that is too close to the service line
  4. Eventual UV damage

With accidental damage, you are looking at things like;

  1. Trucks cutting the power line accidentally causing damage to the attachment point as well as the line
  2. Branches actually falling onto lines and causing damage
  3. The connection box at the point of connection for a home can become damaged
  4. Also at the point of attachment, the riser brackets can become damaged

Does the power company fix issues with my supply?

The power supply along the road, in your street, will be handled by the power company. If they find a defect in those places they are meant to issue residents a notice of that. But they do not help with the supply from the road to your property. That is your responsibility.

Calling in a level 2 electrician

If you have power supply problems that fall within your domain to fix you need to call in a level 2 electrician Sydney. They should have the authorisation to work with the power supply, which is what an accredited level electrician can do. A regular electrician, someone you might have had come by to do work on the home, is not qualified or licensed to work on your power supply. It is dangerous work and they need special training, certain experience, and the right safety knowledge to legally and properly do that work. If electricians that are not approved work on that they face huge fines and there is a risk to everyone.

Summary

When you have issues with your power supply if the problem is with your service line and point of attachment then you need to call in a licensed and authorised level 2 electrician to find out what the issue is and to fix it.
